CW: sexual health concerns
PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS ✨HOLDING SPACE✨ FOR YOUR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE CONCERNS.
In the last 5 minutes of a completely unrelated meeting, a silly little meme about d*scharge sparked a biiiig conversation.
LIKE, 38M IMPRESSIONS BIG.
You could not scroll anywhere in Q4 2024 without coming across something related to Wicked. From scandals among the stars to that interview, Wicked lived rent free in everyone’s minds and on everyone’s feeds.
THE RECIPE
Everyone was using the same meme templates — photos from the carpet, a chaotic finger hold or stills from the film. It was the perfect example of a pop culture moment that every brand wanted to be a part of, but instead of joining the existing one, we wanted to start one.
So, as someone who is chronically online both professionally and personally who occasionally dabbles in queer media, I recalled this ancient text when one icon defaced the original broadway poster.
The leap from a green p- wasn’t crazy — but as sex educators we know that green d*scharge can be the symptom of a bacterial infection or an STI. So it gave us an opportunity to educate our audiences and drive them to Planned Parenthood health centers for treatment — while still being in this moment with the rest of the internet.
Post copy: If you're experiencing wicked sexual and reproductive health care concerns, Planned Parenthood health centers are ✨holding space✨ to help — even if your p*ssy's green. 😉💕💚 Call 1-800-230-PLAN to schedule a visit!
ThE RESULTS
Intrusive thoughts and a deeply unserious disposition garnered over 38M impressions, a segment on Taylor Tomlinson’s @fter Midnight show, a shout out from Pop Crave (my favorite news source), and an article from TMZ that was (mostly) complimentary and passed the vibe check?!
THE REFLECTION
Bringing sexual and reproductive health care topics into the pop culture moments can be difficult with the stigma attached to it, but seeing the reach and (mostly) positive reception shows that when you take risks, are a little risqué, and don't take yourselves too seriously, you can start to normalize these conversations.
